TBILISI, March 28 – Georgian law enforcement authorities said Saturday they had arrested nine people on drug-related charges in a multi-region operation.

According to the ministry, the arrests were carried out at different times by officers from the Central Criminal Police Department as well as police units in Adjara, Tbilisi, and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti. The ministry said those detained include both Georgian citizens and foreign nationals, as well as people with prior convictions.

Police said searches of the suspects, their homes and yards, along with investigative experiments at locations identified by the detainees, produced a wide range of drugs allegedly prepared for sale. The substances listed by the ministry included mephedrone, methadone, buprenorphine, morphine, codeine, thebaine, heroin, alpha-PVP, cocaine, and marijuana.

The Interior Ministry also said officers seized materials used for packaging drugs and money believed to have been obtained from narcotics sales.

The case is being investigated under several articles of Georgia’s Criminal Code, for offenses carry penalties ranging up to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.
