TBILISI, August 29 – Dozens of families have been impacted by a severe weather event in Baghdati in western Georgia, with damage to both homes and public infrastructure, Interpressnews reported Friday.
Infrastructure Minister Revaz Sokhadze visited the municipality, which lies south of Zestaponi, and said government crews were working to clear roads, remove debris and repair damaged areas.
According to the Infrastructure Ministry, the storm had left debris in yards and even inside people’s homes, in some areas. Heavy equipment from the Roads Department and the United Water Supply Company was working continuously on Thursday and Friday, together with technical teams from contractors.
Crews were clearing roads and streets, restoring damaged areas and cleaning channels and other infrastructure to allow water to flow freely. The ministry said traffic on the main road through the area was moving normally.
Sokhadze said helping affected households was a priority. Local authorities would provide assistance according to need, while crews would continue removing debris from homes and surrounding areas.
The severe weather also damaged parts of an ongoing water supply and sewerage project in the town of Baghdati. Officials agreed with the contractor to first make temporary repairs to damaged road sections to keep traffic moving, before beginning broader restoration work on infrastructure affected by the storm.
