TBILISI, October 13 – The mother of a Georgian prisoner who previously accused prison guards of rape is demanding his urgent transfer to another facility.
Irma Davitadze said Tuesday that her son, Giorgi Davitadze, is in danger at Penitentiary Facility No. 6 in Rustavi, a city near the Georgian capital Tbilisi.
In a social media post reported by Interpressnews, she called for his immediate transfer to the prison in Laituri.
According to Davitadze, a woman named Marika Arevadze had just visited her son and brought back disturbing information about his treatment.
She alleged that guards were opening the small hatch in his cell door every 10 to 15 minutes to insult his wife and children and threaten to make his children disappear.
Her son responded by insulting the guards, she said. Davitadze described the alleged conduct as psychological and physical provocation and warned that her son’s safety was at risk.
The latest complaint follows an earlier dispute over allegations of sexual violence at the same prison.
Giorgi Davitadze previously accused a prison guard of raping him inside a room used to de-escalate incidents involving prisoners. He alleged that several people were involved and claimed that security cameras had recorded what happened.
Georgia’s Special Penitentiary Service rejected his account, calling the allegations disinformation.
The service maintained that Davitadze had not been subjected to sexual violence or any other form of violence.
Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office subsequently announced that it had completed its investigation into the alleged sexual assault.
According to prosecutors, the evidence gathered during the investigation showed that no violence or criminal conduct had occurred during a search of Davitadze in the prison’s de-escalation room.
