TBILISI, DFWatch–The Public Defender in Georgia has asked the Prosecutor General’s Office to investigate an instance of alleged mistreatment by police.
A prisoner at Kutaisi (“No 2”) prison told Public Defender’s staff about the incident, which took place on November 20, 2014, according to a statement published by the Public Defender’s Office on Friday.
The prisoner was detained together with friends in Baghdati in western Georgia.
He was forced into a car and taken to the woods. There, the prisoner claims, police beat him for six hours and demanded that he admit to committing theft.
Later he was taken to Baghdati police station, where he was subject to verbal abuse by investigators.
According to documents from the detention facility in Baghdati, obtained by the Public Defender, the prisoner had injuries in the face and on the right side of the abdominal region.
The Public Defender asks the Prosecutor General’s Office to investigate the incident as possible torture and mistreatment by police.
