TBILISI, DFWatch–Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says Georgia’s Association Agreement with the EU is not a threat to Russia-Georgia relations.

Steinmeier, who is visiting Georgia with his French colleague Laurent Fabius, said at a press conference on Thursday that the association agreement Georgia is planning to sign with the EU at the end of June is not directed against anyone.

He also said that the economic relations Georgia currently has with the EU will deepen, but that doesn’t threaten the economic relations Georgia has with Russia.

Steinmeier continued saying that he is certain the treaty will be signed in June, and then comes the implementation of the agreement, which will be important.

Asked about a possible Georgian membership in the EU, he answered that it is hard to say what will happen in 10, 15 or 20 years.

Laurent Fabius said the EU treaty doesn’t legally or in practice concern the issue of joining the EU. He said the agreement is important to strengthen relations between the EU and Georgia.

The foreign ministers of France and Germany held a meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Gharbiashvili.

On May 13, the president of France will visit Georgia, while June 2, Gharibashvili is visiting Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel.
