TBILISI, DFWatch–NATO envoy James Appathurai says the alliance does not have any evidence that Georgian troops in Afghanistan ‘are specifically targeted.’
Appathurai, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, said this responding to questions from journalists about the so-called Jihad video containing threats against Georgian soldiers serving in Afghanistan.
He said NATO doesn’t have ‘these kind of intelligence systems’ to investigate the details of the video, but Georgia’s allies are working with the government to find out more.
“What I can say is that we don’t have any evidence that Georgian troops in Afghanistan are specifically targeted,” he said. “They are in a very dangerous area, and like all of our soldiers, are targeted.”
The Interior Ministry is conducting an investigation into the video with support from the FBI and representatives of Israel’s law enforcement bodies. The only news about the story was that the investigation so far has revealed the location of the IP address from which the video was posted, but representatives of the Interior Ministry claim it is not easy to investigate this type of cyber crimes.
