TBILISI, DFWatch — Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office claims to have revealed a case of embezzlement in a cleaning contractor for the city of Tbilisi.
Chief Prosecutor Archil Kbilashvili said that Tbilservice Group – a company established in 2006 which provides different services to provide cleanliness in Tbilisi – has a department for public relations with 764 employees and a USD 3 million budget.
The investigative service tracked this department and discovered that none of the supposed employees of that department have anything to do with cleaning service or public relations.
Kbilashvili said Tbilservice switched to a self-financing system July 1, 2011; the same day the city enforced a controversial garbage fee which was proportional to the electricity bill.
“So when our citizens paid increased payment for trash, this payment assisted activists of the National Movement to implement political activities,” he said on Friday.
Kbilashvili hinted that Mayor Gigi Ugulava will be questioned about this soon, as the one who is ultimately responsible.
