TBILISI, DFWatch – Georgian authorities have succeeded in saving one of their citizens from being executed for drug crimes in Malaysia.

The news comes in a statement released by Georgia’s Prosecutor General’s office. It says a Malaysian court has overturned Darejan Kokhtashvili’s (37) death sentence and changed it into a six years’ prison sentence, after considering evidence presented by a Georgian delegation.

The delegation is currently in Kota Kinabalu in the east of Malaysia, where the second Georgian detainee, Babutsa Gordadze (26), is being held.

Gordadze and Kokhtashvili were arrested in Malaysia in October 2010, accused of trafficking drugs worth three million dollars. The drugs were found in picture frames found in their baggage; however, the women claim they knew nothing about the drugs.

Malaysia uses the death penalty for the category of crime the two are sentenced for.
