TBILISI, DFWatch–Georgia’s President Mikheil Saakashvili kicked off his visit to the US by meeting with ex-president George W. Bush and NATO’s Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Pictures posted on Saakashvili’s official Facebook page showed him and his wife Sandra Roelofs standing next to the former US president. They were expected to attend the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas, Texas.

Bush visited Georgia in May, 2005, a visit notable for a speech in which he said that Georgia after the Rose Revolution is a “beacon of liberty for the region and the world”, quoted by the BBC. During the speech, he was subject to an assassination attempt, as a man threw a grenade towards the podium.

Saakashvili also had dinner with the NATO Secretary General and discussed Georgia’s relationship with NATO, as well as latest events taking place in the country.

He later plans to participate in the Sedona Forum, a conference organized by his old friend, Senator John McCain.

Also on the agenda is meetings with Secretary of State John Kerry and Vice President Joe Biden.
