TBILISI, DFWatch–Georgian celebrities, including politicians and journalists, are joining the international charity movement Ice Bucket Challenge, which aims gathering donations to support treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS.

ALS is a disease which can lead to complete paralysis or death. Most Georgians donate money to the local charity foundation We Help, which has gathered more than 10,000 lari (USD 6,000) during the last week.

MPs from both government and opposition are posting messages about accepting the challenge and pouring ice water, and calling on others to follow up.

Two days ago, Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili said he too is joining the campaign and will contribute money to it.

“I accept this challenge and since I am head of the government, transfer money not a single time but monthly from my salary to Fund of Solidarity, which I am sure will help many people soon,” he writes, referring to the fund which was set up by the government.

Gharibashvili challenged other government members to join the campaign, and said it’s up to each of them to decide in what form will they contribute.

The rules of the campaign is to dump a bucket full of ice water over one’s head and donate money, or donate ten times more money if one doesn’t want to pour the water.

People accepting the challenge record a video of the water pouring, explaining its rules, naming a person who challenged them and another person whom they want to challenge to do the same. They will have 24 hours to do it.

Many people from around the world have joined the campaign, like George Bush, who challenged Bill Clinton. President Barack Obama was challenged by many people, but he chose to only donate money, according to White House. http://www.wjla.com/articles/2014/08/president-obama-bows-out-of-ice-bucket-challenge-but-donates-money-106332.html
