TBILISI, DFWatch–Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili on Monday fired seven ministers: the ministers for agriculture, prisons, refugees, environment, infrastructure, culture and diaspora.
Explaining his decision at a morning briefing, he said that for the last two months ‘too many events have taken place in the country.’ It was necessary with staff changes so that the country can fulfill its promises.
He said after Georgia signed what is called an association agreement with the EU and the government coalition won the local election, he said, it requires fulfilling all the promises and goals.
This requires double energy and switching gears to a new level, Gharibashvili explained.
He continued saying that the ministers who are being sacked were doing a good job, but now changes are needed. He thanked them for what they have done, although none of them attended the briefing.
Gharibashvili explained that all of them are aware of the decision, because Georgian Dream’s political council discussed this issue on Sunday. He said that they remain as members of the political team of the governing coalition.
The PM says people will learn who all their replacements will be in maximum two days, but he named two of them already on Monday. Prison Minister Sozar Subari will be new minister of refugees, while Infrastructure Minister Elguja Khokrishvili will replace Environment Minister Khatuna Gogaladze.
Parliament will now be asked to declare trust in the new cabinet of ministers, a vote which the president is required to ask for within a week if at least five members of the government have been changed, according to the constitution.
There are seventeen ministries in Georgia’s government today.
PM added that changes might also be necessary in the future.
