TBILISI, DFWatch–The government in Georgia is preparing to sue the Russian communications network MTC.

Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili said Monday at a press conference that he met with Polish journalists on Sunday and received information that the area near the de facto border with South Ossetia is being serviced by MTC. Whenever someone approaches the Russian-imposed border, the mobile phone shows that it is connected to MTC.

“This happened immediately when they were 200 meters close to the so-called border. I recorded all this,” Ivanishvili said, adding that he warns the company that Georgia will appeal ‘where it is necessary and how international regulations define the process.’

The PM thinks this gives reason for concern.

“I will use the situation to get attention of the Russian government to avoid such misunderstanding,” he said.

Ivanishvili says it is unknown whether MTC’s actions are agreed with the Russian government, but he underlined that this is a Russian company.

“There will be a strict reaction to this, and we will demand answers from the government that it is not Russian territory. This is Georgian territory.”
