TBILISI, DFWatch–Police in Georgia are searching for a prisoner who escaped from a court building on Monday.
The man, a resident of the a village Velistsikhe, is charged with injuring a person with a weapon.
The regional court in Gurjaani, in the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia, said judge Mito Khinashvili was at a hearing and was about to read his decision to place the defendant in pre-trial detention.
After hearing that he was to be detained, the man was taken to a court cell and kept under police surveillance, but managed to escape.
Deputy Interior Minister Archil Talakvadze said on Tuesday that police is searching for the escapee. According to the ministry, the Prosecutor’s Office is to launch an investigation into faults by the police officers whose duty it was to supervise the prisoner.
Police are stopping vehicles at different places in Kakheti in their search for the fugitive.
