TBILISI, DFWatch–Tbilisi City Court did not set bail conditions for six Defense Ministry officials who are on trial for being involved in a food poisoning case in 2013. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, ten cases of poisoning of military employees took place.
The six officials were charged shortly after Prosecutor’s Office detained five Defense Ministry officials for embezzlement.
Those two cases caused political crisis in the country, when the defense minister claimed they were politically motivated, which led to his dismissal, and this was followed by the resignation of two more ministers and the Free Democrats party leaving the Georgian Dream coalition.
On Thursday, the Prosecutor’s Office asked to set bail for five officials at 10,000 laris each (USD 6,000) and one 2,000 laris (USD 1,200) in the food poisoning case.
But the court set no conditions before the trial.
A preliminary hearing is now scheduled for December 24.
The suspects are charged with negligence and carelessness of their duties.
