TBILISI, DFWatch–Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili says he will not manage to visit the US before he leaves politics.
He said during a meeting with journalists on Wednesday that the visit should have been held in November, but ‘probably it won’t take place.’
“I don’t think this is a tragedy,” he said, adding that he told the same to the US Ambassador to Georgia. “We have done all that was necessary to do with our greatest strategic partner. We must take care and try as much as possible not to weaken the US interests in Georgia.”
The PM believes the government has taken steps towards this goal by deepening relations with the US administration.
“I’ve not visited the US, but in my opinion, more was done, and relations between our states are more in order.”
Ivanishvili said he has received an invitation from the US, and that the Georgian people should not feel insulted.
“I received an invitation. My first invitation was from the US, but then I thought that it wasn’t best time for it. Finally, Richard [Norland, US Ambassador to Georgia,] told me to plan the visit for November, but then I didn’t know how things would go on. Now I think it won’t be managed,” he said.
The PM said he thinks this won’t cause any damage.
“I may go there as a non-political person, if there is a necessity,” he added.
Ivanishvili plans to leave his post after the presidential election. When he became prime minister he planned to go to the US on his first visit abroad, but the visit never took place.
