TBILISI, DFWatch – An opposition candidate Tuesday presented details about an alleged secret paramilitary organization he claims was recently organized by President Mikheil Saakashvili in western Georgia.

Leader of the Free Democrats Irakli Alasania had called the press together at Tbilisi Marriott Hotel to explain the serious allegations first made last week.

March 15 at a metting with foreign diplomats Alasania said special units are being set up in the Zugdidi region and these new forces will be used by the government after the elections. He also said the president is not going to conduct fair and free elections, but instead is preparing for civil war. Alasania said the result could be ‘like in Syria’.

Saakashvili called the allegations an attempt to involve the government in the election campaign.

Saakashvili quoted Alasania’s words about Syria and commented:“I want to translate what this mean – they threatened of thousands human victims, with hundreds and thousands buildings collapsing; demolishing cities, children with cut heads, in one word – with catastrophe. I want to remind everyone that it is 2012 today and not 1992. It seems, some people still haven’t learnt anything.”
