TBILISI, DFWatch — A military search team left for Afghanistan on Monday in order to search for a Georgian soldier who has been missing for almost a week.

The team is headed by the deputy chief of the Joint Staff.

ISAF isalready  conducting a search and rescue operation, and Georgia’s Defense Ministry has recently set up a coordination center which is also involved in the case.

The soldier’s family has been informed of the details, while Georgian troops in Afghanistan are under tight security.

Defense Minister Irakli Alasania Monday said that there is a high probability that the Georgian soldier is alive.

After a scheduled government session on Monday he said that rescue work has been ongoing since December 19 and is under ISAF’s command.

“He disappeared from the base,” Alasania said.

The press office of the Defense Ministry told DF Watch that Georgia has not been informed about which province the Georgian soldier is serving in, but the ministry will provide further details as soon as they are known.
