TBILISI, DFWatch–Work has been halted at the ancient Sakdrisi gold mine in southern Georgia, Interpressnews reports.

The news agency quotes Irakli Lomidze, spokesperson for the Sakdrisi Survival Committee, who said the heavy machinery stopped Sunday night and did not resume work Monday.

“I don’t know the reason for the suspension of the work. Maybe it’s a decision by RMG due to bad weather. There has been rainy weather for several days,” Lonidze said.

RMG Gold wants to extract the lucrative yellow metal from the ancient mine, but doubts over the protection of  historic heritage values has sparked a campaign against it.

Protesters have been camped for two weeks near the site to monitor activity until foreign experts arrive to conduct a more thorough study than what has been done until now.

Sakdrisi mine has according to some researchers archaeological traces of humans 5,400 years back.
