TBILISI, DFWatch — President Mikheil Saakashvili’s National Movement party wants to tie Georgia to the mast in terms of the course of its foreign policy.

Spokesperson Giorgi Baramidze Wednesday presented a draft bill that will write into legislation what the unchangeable goals of Georgia’s foreign policy are.

First, Georgia’s unchanged course is to join NATO and the EU, so that no matter what kind of government is in office, it will not be legally able to change this goal.

Second, the non-recognition policy towards Georgia’s occupied territories, and third, a guarantee that Georgia will never join organizations where the occupying country Russia plays a leading role, including the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Giorgi Baramidze said the reason for the bill is a recent misunderstanding in Russian media about Georgia’s possible return to the CIS. He said there should be guarantees that Georgia will not join organizations where Russia plays a leading role. That would be dangerous for Georgia’s sovereignty, he said.

UNM hopes the majority in parliament, the Georgian Dream coalition, will support the initiative.
