TBILISI, DFWatch–Police have detained two former policemen involved in the Robakidze case; a police operation in 2004 which led to the death of a 19-year old man.

The two, Maizer Liparteliani and Levan Lobzhanidze, were detained Monday evening because they changed their testimonies after the publication of a video which appears to show the moments immediately after Buta Robakidze was shot.

They will be charged today under section 371 of the Criminal Code about giving investigators contradictory testimony.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Liparteliani has given testimony four times. He first claimed that he didn’t see a weapon at the scene of the murder, but after a video was published last week, he changed his testimony and said that he had in fact seen a weapon.

The other detained policeman has also explained himself several times and gave contradictory versions of events.

About 30 policemen participated in the police operation and have been questioned about what happened.

The night of November 24, 2004 police stopped the car with Buta Robakidze and four others driving in it. Robakidze was shot, while the other four who survived were charged with illegal possession of a weapon and ammunition. They claim the weapon was placed there by the police after they discovered that Robakidze was dead.
