TBILISI, DFWatch — Thick snow is now covering most of Georgia. Some villages are isolated while there are restrictions on traffic on several roads.

Tbilisi airport works normally, but a few flights have been canceled: 17:00, January 9, from Mestia to Tbilisi, 09:30, January 10, from Tbilisi to Batumi, 18:30 January 9, from Tbilisi to Dubai, and 05:05 January 10 from Tbilisi to Munich.

Georgia’s road department warns that cars with trailers, or with more than 30 seats, are not allowed to drive from Kutaisi to Ambrolauri in the Racha region. Other types of cars are allowed if they use chains.

The same restrictions are on the road section of Ujarma, a village in Sagarejo municipality, to Telavi, a town in eastern Georgia. The Road Department also warns to only drive using chains at the Zahesi section of the road into Tbilisi.


There are restrictions on each mountain pass in the north: Stepantsminda, Larsi, Pasanauri, Gudauri, Kobi – all the road from Mtskheta, a region close to Tbilisi to Kazbegi mountains in the north.

Since morning, cars have been stuck in the suburbs of Tbilisi due to frost. Salt is not yet spread in the worst places, but work is ongoing. More than 300 tons of salt had been spread in Tbilisi and nearby villages by 13:00.

A journalist for IPN reports that about 30 villages in Dusheti municipality are isolated by more than one meter of snow. Local municipality representative say there is a danger of landslides, while electricity lines are damaged and part of the population are without electricity.

Weather forecasts predict weather will improve from January 11.
