TBILISI, DFWatch–The NATO Military Committee will visit Georgia February 11-12.

Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze said at Tuesday’s briefing that the visit is important, because it means that the military cooperation with NATO is on a new level.

“Reforms implemented in the military body is positively reflected in NATO reports and all this gives us hope that 2014 will bring new success to Georgia in regard to NATO,” she said.

The foreign minister and other government officials said Georgia has ‘adequate’ expectations to the upcoming NATO summit, meaning that Georgia expects a Membership Action Plan, or MAP.

Defense Minister Irakli Alasania said in an interview with Rustavi 2 TV Tuesday evening that during the visit, the success of Georgia’s reforms in the last years will be summed up.

“I would want that the political part of our relation with NATO would get to the same level as it is in regard to military relations,” he said.

Alasania said the visit also will include discussions about security issues in the region. He said the schedule of the visit is already worked out, and members of the Military Committee will meet with Georgian military officials and government representatives.

“Discussions will concern Georgia’s great transit and infrastructure opportunities, which will give opportunity to NATO member countries to extract forces from Afghanistan,” he continued.

The visit of the NATO Military Committee has been postponed a number of times. https://dfwatch.net/nato-visit-postponed-to-next-year-73716 It should have taken place in November 2012.
