TBILISI, DFWatch–The local government in Telavi, a town in the Kakheti region, has announced a tender for the dismantling of a statue of Joseph Stalin.

According to Information Center of Kakheti, the local government allocated 1 121 lari (USD 660) for the dismantling of the statue, and the winner company must dismantle it by December 31, 2013.

Proposals for dismantling will be received from December 18 to December 23.

The Stalin statue was erected on mount Zuzumbo September 1, 2013. The same day, it was paint-bombed by unknown people who also decorated it with protest messages against Stalin.

September 5, the local government in Telavi ordered the statue dismantled, and gave the group Stalineli, which had put the statue there, five days to comply. But the statue was not taken down.

After the change of government in the end of 2012, several monuments and busts of Stalin have popped up in Georgia, mostly in villages and towns. Mostly elderly people are behind it.
