TBILISI, DFWatch–Tbilisi is making an effort to correct the gender imbalance in its street names, by changing the names of ten streets, naming them after famous women.

There are about 1,200 streets in the capital, 1,120 of which are named after men, according to the City Council.

Naming streets after women comes as a result of a memorandum the City Council signed with Heinrich Böll Foundation in December, 2014. It applies to streets in the capital that don’t have a name yet.

This week, ten women were selected. Among them are the writer Anastasia Tumanishvili-Tsereteli, the philanthropist Mariam Jambakur Orbeliani and the publicist-writer Mariam Ivanishvili-Demuria.

At the end of April, the City Council will decide whether to approve the proposed new street names.

Five women were selected in February, 2015, for the same purpose.
