TBILISI, DFWatch–Police two days ago detained a man who is suspected of beating a journalist working for a conservative newspaper.

According to the Interior Ministry, the suspect insulted and beat Zaza Davitaia on October 22 in the center of Tbilisi.

Davitaia is a journalist who works for the newspaper Asaval Dasavali. After the attack, he was taken to hospital with injuries.

The suspect was detained the next day and according to the ministry he admits guilt.

He is being investigated for persecuting a person for freedom of speech and opinion or because of his political, public or professional activity.

October 1, there waere clashes with members of the pro-National Movement organization  Free Zone, during which they severely beat Davitaia. Free Zone clashed with Free Generation, a group of conservative youth who call themselves former political prisoners.

Asaval Dasavali is often criticized for hate speech, especially against gays, lesbians and other sexual minorities. He was imprisoned during the Saakashvili regime, who arrested him for planning a coup with the support of Russian intelligence, but he was freed under a mass amnesty introduced by the new government.

In the October 1 clashes, Davitaia got a broken rib and a concussion.

Two days after the clashes, opponents and supporters of the National Movement clashed again in Tbilisi. Davitaia was also present there.
