TBILISI, DFWatch–The former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili is giving up his native citizenship, according to Ukrainian media.

According to Ukrainian Pravda, Saakashvili is ‘in the process’ of rejecting his Georgian citizenship. He was given Ukrainian citizenship in late May, 2015, in connection with his appointment as governor of Odessa.

Saakashvili has told Ukrainian media a few times that he plans to return to Georgia. In an interview with Imedi TV he said he doesn’t need Georgian citizenship to come back.

Later he said he wasn’t planning to renounce his Georgian citizenship, but that the Georgian government would revoke it. In any case, he didn’t think he would be able to come back, because he would be arrested.

Saakashvili is wanted in several criminal cases in his home country.
