TBILISI, DFWatch–The Ukrainian government has barred former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvil from entering the country after he visited the protesters in Kyiv.
Saakashvili’s name appears along with 29 Georgians on a list published by the Ukrainian foreign ministry and security service of people who are barred from entering Ukraine. 36 persons on the list are abroad, Ukrainian media report.
The Security Service explains that the listed persons are consulting the opposition, and thereby allowing other countries to realize their political interests in Ukraine.
“The frequent visits by foreigner PR technology and protest activity specialists cause reasonable fear that their activity is dangerous for the national security,” the service writes.
One of the leaders of the opposition, Vitaly Klichko, said that the list also includes members of the Georgian parliament, businessmen, diplomats and citizens of the US and EU.
Saakashvili wrote on his Facebook page that he is sure he will soon be able to come to Kiev to celebrate a ‘democratic triumph.’
“Unfortunately it seems that I will not be able to travel to my adoptive second motherland Ukraine in coming weeks, but my heart and soul will be with my Ukrainian sisters and brothers struggling for their independence, freedom and their deserved European future,” he writes.
