TBILISI, DFWatch–Rikoti tunnel was reopened for traffic on Friday. It is part of the road which connects the eastern and western parts of Georgia and had been blocked for several days due to a landslide.

The landslide was the second one in ten days.

According to the Road Department, the 136 km – 152 km section of the road is now open for all kinds of traffic. The department has put in place a temporary landslide blocking wall.

Even though traffic has been resumed, the road is not fully cleared. Clean-up work will continue from Saturday morning while traffic is let through.

There was a landslide in Rikoti on June 12 and the road was blocked for two days. Another landslide hit the pass on June 17 and the road was closed until June 20.

Other vehicles than trailers and semi-trailers were able to make a detour through Gomi-Sachkhere-Chiatura-Zestaponi while the closure lasted.
