TBILISI, DFWatch–A protest was held Wednesday in Zugdidi, in western Georgia, by relatives of a man detained for injuring a policeman a few days ago.

Their demand was to have him released. But the suspect surrendered to the police and admitted having injured the policeman, who is his friend and was best man in his wedding. He claims that the policeman attempted to rape his wife.

The policeman, who had one of his ears cut off, was first hospitalized in Zugdidi, but later moved to a hospital in Kutaisi, because he doesn’t expect locals in Zugdidi to forgive him for what he has done. Such a form of crime is particularly humiliating in Georgia, he said.

Participants at the demonstration demanded that the suspect is released until the trial starts.
