TBILISI, DFWatch — Bucharest decision that Georgia will become a member of NATO stands if Georgia fulfills necessary criteria, NATO Secretary General states.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen was speaking at a press conference after a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council of Foreign Ministers. When asked about Georgia, he said they told the new Georgian government that the last elections lived up to democratic standards and that Georgia that way passed a very important test.

“Now we look forward to a smooth cohabitation between the new government and the current president. We look forward to presidential elections next year,” he said, and added that he hopes the presidential election will also be as democratically conducted as the election in October 2012 was.

“We have never planned to have discussions on Membership Action Plan or any other steps at the NATO-Georgia Commission meeting tomorrow,” he explained that on a meeting they will discuss Georgia’s NATO aspirations with the new government.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the new government had its NATO aspirations reaffirmed.

“So there seems to be a broad consensus in Georgia that Georgia will continue to pursue a future membership of our Alliance and in exchange, we have reiterated that the decision we took in Bucharest in 2008 that Georgia will become a member of NATO provided, of course, Georgia fulfills the necessary criteria, that that Bucharest decision still stands.”

The NATO-Georgia commission will also hear a report regarding the country’s achievements and future plans.
