TBILISI, DFWatch–One police special unit employee died during an operation to apprehend a man suspected of burglary. The suspect also died in the shooting.

According to the Interior Ministry, employees of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti regional police department conducted an operation to arrest Teimuraz Okujava in the village Khorga. The suspect had armed himself with two guns and grenades and resisted police. There was an exchange of fire, which left Okujava killed, and also claimed the life of Davit Demuria, a special unit employee.

An additional four policemen were wounded and brought to the regional hospital in Zugdidi. Later the same day they were brought to the capital. Their health is in no danger.

Police announced Okujava wanted August 3, 2013. He is charged with burglary. According to investigators, on October 2, he and several other persons attacked their own relatives the Karchava family in the village Torsa, in the vicinity of Khobi. As a result of the attack, one family member died.

One of the attackers was detained a few days ago, another one is in Georgia’s breakaway region Abkhazia.
