TBILISI, DFWatch–Georgia’s prime minister on Wednesday again promised that Georgian Dream will amend the Constitution after the October 8 election in order to change the definition of marriage.

Now that the president has rejected a proposed referendum to define marriage as a union of a man and a woman, the government will accept that this won’t be an issue for a referendum, PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili conceded during a government session today.

But the idea behind the referendum is something the ruling party agrees with fully, he emphasized.

“We completely share the desire of people behind the referendum bid, that the definition of marriage as written in the Civil Code – that civil marriage is voluntary union of a man and a woman to create a family – has to be written in the Constitution as well,” Kvirikashvili said.

The government will now sign the president’s decision about not conducting a referendum, but after the election the procedures to amend the Constitution will continue, he promised.

“Our political power was the one that initiated the amendment in parliament […] As soon as the election is over, we will surely implement the constitutional amendments and it will be written into the Constitution.”

The PM rejected a widely held belief in Georgia, that the West wants to force other countries to legalize same-sex marriage.

“Europe wants us just like we are. This kind of Georgia is precious and valuable for Europe, which respects traditions. This is why we will surely implement constitution amendments after election.”
