TBILISI, DFWatch–The Prosecutor General’s Office has launched an investigation into an incident where a man was allegedly beaten by police officers.

The Public Defender wrote on Thursday that a person had surgery at the central hospital in Tbilisi on November 10, and claimed that the injuries were from being beaten by the police.

The statement says that the police detained him for administrative offence at the night of November 4 and placed him in a car. He remembers a police officer hit him in face. Afterward, he was taken to the police station in Gldani where he was taken to a room and beaten.

The ombudsman writes that the Tbilisi and Mtskheta-Mtianeti detention facility protocols describe bodily injuries.

After the statement by the Public Defender, the Prosecutor General’s Office launched an investigation based on article 333 of the Criminal Code about exceeding official power.
