Tbilisi, DFWatch – US Secretary of State John Kerry condemned occupation of Georgian territories by Russia by issuing a short statement on 8th anniversary of Russo-Georgian war.

“The United States remains steadfast in our support of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia’s occupation and militarization of parts of Georgia’s territory are unacceptable. And we continue to call on Russia to fulfill its obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement, including the withdrawal of its forces to pre-conflict positions and allowing unfettered access for the delivery of humanitarian supplies,” reads the statement distributed by US embassy in Tbilisi.

The war, which broke out in August 7, 2008 lasted five days and caused death of hundreds of soldiers and civilians from both sides, as well as displacement thousands of people – mostly ethnic Georgians. In the wake of hostilities Russia recognized two Georgian breakaway republics -Abkhazia and South Ossetia – as independent states and has stationed its military personnel there.
