TBILISI, DFWatch–A house used by Jehovah’s Witnesses was fired at in Tbilisi on Monday night.
Witnesses say they heard sounds of shots at about 23:00. At least 15 bullets were fired at the building. No-one was injured.
Representatives of the Kingdom Hall in Vazisubani, a Tbilisi suburb, could not explain why the incident happened.
Police launched an investigation for deliberate damage to other people’s property, a violation of article 187 of the Criminal Code.
Even though the building is located only a few hundred meters from the nearest police station, representatives of Jehova’s Witnesses say an investigation was launched only after they went to the police.
Rustavi 2 quotes Jehovah’s Witnesses elder Nukri Mirchuani saying that they weren’t aware of what had happened at night, but only learned about it in the morning.
Giorgi Muradovi, a Jehovah’s Witness, told Rustavi 2 they do not have a conflict in this district, and it is unclear why this might have happened. But it is not first time the building has been attacked. Some people threw stones at it a while ago.
Jehovah’s Witnesses are frequently harassed in Georgia, and in Terjola they were not allowed to build a congregation house. Other houses have been attacked, and there have been threats against members of the religious community.
