TBILISI, DFWatch — The International Criminal Court (ICC) is considering launching an investigation into the war between Georgia and Russia in August 2008.

The Justice Ministry of Georgia on Wednesday released a statement which says that in accordance with Georgia’s international obligations, the Justice Ministry is continuing its active cooperation with the ICC.

Within the frames of this cooperation, there might be an investigation into the Russian-Georgian war of 2008.

The statement says that the ICC has already studied the events in the war, and the next step now is to decide whether an investigation will be launched or not. The ICC prosecutor will make this decision.

Georgia’s Chief Prosecutor’s office sent the latest information regarding investigations in Georgia in the fall of 2012. This information is reflected in the report of the ICC prosecutor, which was published November 27, 2012.

“The Georgian Justice Ministry together with the Prosecutor’s Office will continue an exhaustive investigation of incidents which took place during the armed conflict between Russia and Georgia in 2008. Therefore, the ministry plans to expand and strengthen its investigative group,” the statement says.

Other details are not yet known, but the ministry promises to immediately inform the public about specific decisions.
