TBILISI, DFWatch–In a new report, Human Rights Watch criticizes Georgia for failing to prosecute attacks on activists from the National Movement, even though the perpetrators have been identified.

In its latest world report, the organization writes that during the election campaign in April, 2014, members of the National Movement were disrupted and attacked in four cities and towns.

“In May, several men attacked Zurab Chiaberashvili, a former health minister and leading UNM member; Chiaberashvili was briefly hospitalized for head injuries,” HRW writes.

The New York-based human rights group also draws attention to an attack on Nugzar Tsiklauri in March.

“The authorities failed to prosecute his assailants despite the fact that they were publicly identified.”

Chiaberashvili received head injuries in the attack. He claimed the attack was politically motivated.

The Prosecutor’s Office responded that Revaz Tabukashvili was charged with the attack on Chiaberashvili and released on a USD 2,000 bail. Tbilisi City Court later found him guilty and fined him USD 1,000.
