TBILISI, DFWatch–Grand Mufti of Caucasus, Haji Allahshükür Hummat Pashazade, arrived this morning for a two day visit to Georgia.

Pashazade, who is based in Baku, Azerbaijan, was greeted at the airport by Georgian Patriarch Ilia II, who hosted him at the main office of the Georgian Church, with other clerics in attendance.

“We’ve known each other for years, and it must be said that the friendship of our countries was much dependent on our friendship, and I think this is one more step to prove friendly relations,” Ilia II said.

He added that the visit will further strengthen the friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Pashazade said he is pleased with the relation with the patriarch, which is proved by the long-time friendship.

“We’ve talked much about the cultural issues of our countries, also territorial integrity. Our long-time friendship will continue in the future,” he said, adding that the patriarch’s statements about the disputed territories Abkhazia and Nagorno-Karabakh are very important and he hopes that this will bring positive results.

There are planned meetings between Pashazade and the president, the prime minister and the speaker of parliament, as well as other members of government.

Last time Pashazade visited Georgia was in January, 2013, in connection with Ilia II’s 80th birthday.
