TBILISI, DFWatch – The Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili has dismissed the charges made by one of the opposition leaders that he was preparing for civil war as a campaign move ahead of the parliamentary election in October.

He was responding to something the Free Democrats leader Irakli Alasania said Thursday while meeting foreign diplomats, that special military units are being trained in western Georgia as a preparation for civil war.

Saakashvili answered in a speech he held Saturday in Samegerelo, western Georgia, while visiting a greenhouse farm.

“They are trying to draw us into the election campaign. They are thinking about seats. I am thinking about this greenhouse, industry, new resorts, new cities, new job places, new perspectives, because this is my ambition and not who will resettle to which seat. Let them conduct any campaign they want within legal frames,” Saakashvili said.

In his media appearance Thursday, the same day as German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle visited Tbilisi, Irakli Alasania also said that we might see what he called a ‘Syria scenario’ repeated in Georgia. He said that the president divides society into two parts, one which is on his side and the others who he considers Russian agents. Alasania was meeting foreign diplomats together with the Georgian billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili and David Usupashvili from the Republican party.

“All this can result in a situation like in Syria and a civil war,” Alasania said.

Saakashvili quoted Alasania’s words about Syria and commented:

“I want to translate what this mean – they threatened of thousands human victims, with hundreds and thousands buildings collapsing; demolishing cities, children with cut heads, in one word – with catastrophe. I want to remind everyone that it is 2012 today and not 1992. I seems, some people still haven’t learnt anything.”

The president went on to talk about various successful programs implemented in the country lately.

“This is what we are proud of and will be proud in the future. So, all kinds of threats toward these people are really great immorality. Stop even playing with such issues even in your own fantasies and if you have it on your mind, keep it to yourselves. Let us build and let people live,” the president added.
