TBILISI, DFWatch–The government coalition and its leading figures have lost popularity, according to a new poll by National Democratic Institute (NDI).

42 percent of the questioned say the Georgian Dream coalition is closer to them, while 11 percent say they feel closer to the National Movement.

This is the same result as in the previous survey, but in 2013, Georgian Dream’s rating was 62 percent. In the newest survey, 30 percent says that none of the parties are closer to them.

On Wednesday, NDI published the political part of its survey. It shows that Patriarch Ilia II still has the highest level of trust among people – 91 percent – more than any politician or government institutions. But the number has fallen slightly from 96 percent in the last survey, conducted in April.


Defense Minister Irakli Alasania has the highest rating among politicians with 60 percent saying that they like him. 67 percent said they liked him in April.

54 percent have a favorable impression of Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili, while 64 percent liked him in April.

Davit Usupashvili, Speaker of Parliament, is liked by 51 percent, ten percent less than in April. Davit Bakradze, parliamentary opposition leader, is liked by 48 percent. 51 percent liked him in April.

When it comes to Bidzina Ivanishvili, the businessman who brought together the Georgian Dream coalition and served as prime minister for the first year, 50 percent think that he still remains the decision-maker. 45 percent like him, while 51 percent liked him in April.

NDI’s survey was conducted between July 23 and August 7, 2014. 3,338 people were interviewed.
