TBILISI, DFWatch–Georgia’s speaker of parliament says his country could disappear from the world map if abandoned by NATO.

“If Georgia takes step towards NATO, this will cause another aggression from Russia,” Speaker of Parliament Davit Usupashvili said Tuesday in Vilnius during a meeting of parliamentarians about the EU’s Eastern Partnership.

Georgia expects NATO to set it on course for membership at a summit in Wales in September. Usupashvili said his country is taking risks by approaching NATO and needs answers to what will happen if it becomes Russia’s next target.

The speaker criticized Western leaders for continuing to have normal relations with Russia after the 2008 Russia-Georgia war, and said this shouldn’t be repeated.

“We are happy that our Ukrainian friends get timely and adequate support in this difficult period for them.”

He also called for unity within the EU during the Ukraine crisis.
