TBILISI, DFWatch–The Georgian president on Sunday praised the students at Tbilisi State University for their commitment to social issues after the end of a near week-long sit-in.

President Giorgi Margvelashvili recalled sending advisers to the university during the protests to learn what was happening there.

“I wanted to know not only from the media, but also how the students felt. We have actively been involved in this process,” he said adding that he is always happy to see socially active youth.

“There have been times when I was surprised at why the students weren’t actively engaged in solving university problems.”

He expressed hope that the students, who have been protesting over the last couple of weeks, will someday enter politics.

“I loved the way young people spoke, how they formed an opinion and position, how they organized themselves and this way this process had been positive,” he said.

“When they acknowledged that the process reached its peak, they had enough political sense to understand that they had to change something and many politicians in Georgia lack this sense.”

Margvelashvili said he wished that when the students who protested graduate, they will think of the country.

In an interview with the Public Broadcaster, he commented on the alleged presence of intelligence agents – so-called ODRs – at TSU by saying that when he was elected president he freed the government of ODRs.

“If the administration can exist without ODRs, the university will also be able to,” he said.
