TBILISI, DFWatch – The opposition Georgian Dream coalition is ready to join a declaration asking for a competitive, fair and peaceful election.

Maia Panjikidze, spokesperson for the coalition, said Monday that the coalition supports a document published July 16 and expresses readiness to comply with principles reflected in the non-use of violance declaration which was prepared by the campaign ‘This Affects You Too’.

The idea was picked up by the ruling National Movement party and made into an ethics charter containing four points.

“The four-point proposal by the National Movement is unacceptable to us first of all because it in fact says that we should refuse to defend our rights in a legal way regarding the election results. Their text says that parties take on responsibilities that we should recognize the results of the elections without any terms, while the constitution allows for the opportunity that if someone has any complaint with the results, this should be reviewed by a court,” Davit Usupashvili, leader of the Republican Party says, adding that Georgian Dream proposes to write into this document that all disputes regarding the election results should be reviewed peacefully and in keeping with the constitution.

The Christian Democrats, the National Democratic Party and tbhe New Rightists Party have agreed to sign the declaration. So have several smaller parties which have a constructive relationship with the government. Georgian Dream is also ready to sign, under certain conditions.

Panjikidze said Monday that such a document should be prepared through the participation of political parties and non-government organizations.

behavior through dialogue.
