TBILISI, DFWatch–The government in Georgia plans to reorganize the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor’s Office.

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said at a press conference Friday that the Interior Ministry will be completely transformed and made into a public service body.

The state security services will be separated and formed into an independent body.

Elaborating on changes first outlined two weeks ago, he said that the security service will have ‘new content, structure and form’.

“This is a very important issue which requires a careful approach,” he said, adding that this reform needs to take into account all the challenges which the country is facing right now.

A group including parliamentarians, government members and civil society will work on preparing the reform.

When it comes to the Prosecutor’s Office, Garibashvili said it will be based on an ‘institutionally balanced’ model where neutrality will be ensured and the principle of rule of law followed.

“The goal of this reform will be to form the Prosecutor’s Office as an effective mechanism to fight crime,” he noted.

By conducting these reforms, the country will get systemic changes which are necessary for strengthening the state.

“You remember our coalition promised people systemic changes and these reforms is proof that we are treating our promises with great responsibility.”
