TBILISI, DFWatch–Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili expresses concern about Russia moving the border into the territory of Georgia’s breakaway region Abkhazia.

A few days ago, the Russian Federation and de facto government of Abkhazia made a decision to establish a ‘border zone’ at the River Psou from January 20 to March 21 in relation with the upcoming Winter Sochi Olympics. They explained that the goal is to strengthen security measures during the Olympics.

The president’s administration Wednesday expressed concern about the moving of the border 11 kilometers into Georgian territory without Georgia’s agreement.

“It is obvious that while Russia has in fact complete military and security control on this territory, this is not only a technical step, but it has a certain political meaning,” the president writes, adding that the border moving should not go unnoticed by the international community.

He underlined that Georgia has offered to help providing security for the Sochi Olympics.
