TBILISI, DFWatch–Georgia is expecting a ‘beneficial decision’ from the NATO summit in Newport, Wales in September.

Parliament Speaker Davit Usupashvili said Monday that a statement made by US President Barack Obama last week was a lesson for him and other politicians that they must be careful while speaking to journalists.

“I watched the whole recording of this statement and it is obvious that Mr Obama meant the issue of possibility of expanding NATO at the next summit,” he said at a joint press-conference after a meeting with his Latvian counterpart Solvita Āboltiņa, who is visiting Tbilisi.

Usupashvili said that in this regard, neither Obama nor anyone else expects that Georgia will join NATO now.

He said that Georgia continues to take measures to accelerate the NATO integration process.

“We expect a beneficial decision for Georgia in September and every NATO member country agrees on this,” he continued, “but how this decision will be formulated – the working process is in progress.”

Solvita Āboltiņa said Georgia is still considered a candidate country to join NATO and this has been confirmed in numerous statements by NATO representatives.
