TBILISI, DFWatch – The winner in the Georgian parliamentary election says it would be wise of Mikheil Saakashvili to step down and announce early presidential election.

The next presidential election is planned for late 2013.

Bidzina Ivanishvili said this at a press conference on Tuesday, a day after the parliamentary election which he won, according to preliminary results.

The Georgian Dream coalition leader says it would be the most logical step from Mikheil Saakashvili and he expects this of the president.

“He won’t be able to continue having powers, so the most way will be for him to write his application for resignation and announce presidential election. It would be best for me if he resigned before we start any procedures. It would be better for his future. I don’t take care of his future, but I care about my country’s future,” Ivanishvili said.

He added that for the president to resign would be the most logical step after Saakashvili made a statement in the morning, in which he said that he and his force are moving into opposition.

48% of the votes have now been counted, and figures from the Central Election Commission show that the ruling National Movement received 41.0 percent of votes, while Georgian Dream received 54.1 percent.
