TBILISI, DFWatch–The Prosecutor’s Office in Georgia wants to create a new department which will investigate offenses committed in the course of legal proceedings.

The initiative comes after the office has received thousands of applications from victims of alleged torture, inhuman treatment, coercion, and people forced to give up their property. The problem is that these violations were committed in the course of legal proceedings, a short statement by the office explains the necessity to create such a body.

The statement says the government has issued a decree about creating the new body, called the Department to Investigate Offenses Committed in the Course of Legal Proceedings.

“The department will ensure the investigation of the above-mentioned alleged instances of crime, as well as the exercise of prosecutorial supervision in the course of investigation and support of public prosecution in the event the case goes to court,” the office’s statement adds.

The Prosecutor’s Office is often criticized for failing to investigate cases of officials exceeding their powers, policemen violating rules and cases of mistreatment in prison.

The ombudsman recently made a compilation of cases which showed that the authorities rarely follow his recommendations.
