TBILISI, DFWatch–After several weeks of speculation, Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili on Friday confirmed that the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party is considering its secretary Irakli Kobakhidze for the post as new speaker of parliament.

It was expected that the stern party secretary would replace the outgoing speaker, Davit Usupashvili from the Republicans, after GD’s landslide victory, but this is the first time representatives of the ruling party have confirmed it officially.

Commenting on the debate in domestic media, the presumed new speaker insisted that consultations about his candidacy have not yet begun.

Another possible candidate is GD parliament member Giorgi Volski.

The new speaker will replace Usupashvili, who left the Republican Party after the second round of the election.
