TBILISI, DFWatch–Koba Davitashvili, a member of parliament from the Georgian Dream coalition and leader of the People’s Party, says he is leaving politics because of a lack of support.

Davitashvili says he realized after the recent presidential election that he doesn’t have the people’s support.

In August, he left the Georgian Dream coalition to run for president but received only 0.6 percent of the votes, according to preliminary results from the Central Election Commission (CEC).

On Wednesday, he said that he won’t hold any more briefings, participate in TV debates, and will withdraw all his legislative initiatives from parliament, but will remain as an MP, because his salary as parliamentarian it is the only income his family has.

“I decided to leave politics because a politician must have the people’s support and when the support is low, it isn’t worth staying,” he said, adding that he will remain as leader of the People’s Party, as some financial reports need to be done and salaries paid for observers. After this procedure is finished he will let party members decide whether the party will continue to exist or not.

Davitashvili thinks the election was peaceful without fraud and pressure. Before the election, he said that if he didn’t receive more than 3 percent, he would leave politics.
